More than Eleven thousand die in Asian Quake, Tsunamis

The death toll is rising across southern and southeast Asia, with more than 11,000 people reported dead after huge waves spawned by an underwater earthquake slammed coastlines across the region.

Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India and Thailand were hardest hit by the tsunamis, which sent walls of waters up to 10 meters high over beaches and coastlines. The 8.9 magnitude quake hit the west coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island early Sunday. It was the world's biggest tremor in 40 years, and spurred aftershocks felt as far away as Singapore and Burma. The surging waters also injured thousands of people and thousands are still missing -- including fishermen and tourists visiting Southeast Asia at the height of tourist season.

Sri Lankan officials have declared a state of disaster, saying the death toll on the island has surpassed 4,300 people. At least one million lost their homes. In Indonesia, closest to the quake's epicenter, officials say more than 4,100 people have died. Indian officials say at least 2,300 people were killed along the country's southern coast and in the Andaman Islands. Thai officials report more than 300 dead in their country, while many more are missing -- including scores of tourists. Malaysia reports at least 28 dead, and the Maldives has declared a state of emergency.
