Bangladesh Suggests New Date for Postponed SAARC Summit

Bangladesh urged Pakistan to talk to members of the SAARC to set fresh dates for the group's 13th summit, postponed in the wake of the tsunami that devastated South Asia. Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and her Pakistani counterpart Shaukat Aziz spoke on the telephone.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister M. Morshed Khan said "The summit should not remain in a state of uncertainty," He noted that Bangladesh has suggested the second week of February as an ideal time for the meeting. He also said that Pakistan, the sitting chairman of SAARC, will discuss with heads of state and government of other member countries and let host Bangladesh know about a new date soon.

The 13th summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) was scheduled for Jan 9-11, but was postponed following requests from Sri Lanka that was heavily devastated by the Dec 26 tsunami.
