2 Indian Soldiers, 2 Militants Killed in Rebel Siege in Kashmir

Police in Indian Kashmir say a stand-off between two Islamic militants and Indian forces in Srinagar has ended after the rebels were killed by troops. Police officials say two soldiers also died in a gunbattle that began Saturday after the rebels stormed a heavily-guarded sports stadium complex by hurling grenades. It was unclear why the militants targeted the complex, which also houses government offices. However, it is adjacent to the main stadium where India's January 26th Republic Day ceremonies will be held. Members of the Pakistan-based Al-Mansoorain separatist group claimed responsibility for the attack. Militant groups opposed to Indian rule in Kashmir have been waging a guerilla campaign against Indian authorities since 1989. The rebellion has claimed tens of thousands of lives.
