Authorities in northwestern Bangladesh say police have used tear gas to break up a protest by an Islamic vigilante group against the killing of three of its activists.
The authorities say several hundred members of the group known as " Bangla Bhai" took part in the protest in the Rajshahi district Monday. Police arrested more than 60 demonstrators. The three activists were lynched Saturday by villagers who suspected them of killing a local man. Police are investigating both killings.
In Dhaka, the foreign ministry has denied a New York Times report that says the vigilante group is bent upon bringing a Taleban-type strict Islamic system in Bangladesh. The ministry said the article attempted to link the government with the group, which is baseless.
