Pope John Paul has been taken to a Rome hospital for apparent treatment for the flu.
Officials say the pope entered the Gemelli Hospital late Tuesday as a precaution. The pope's aides earlier canceled his scheduled appearances for the next few days after he fell ill Sunday. This is the first time in more than one year that his poor health forced him to miss an audience with Roman Catholic pilgrims.
The 84-year-old Pope John Paul suffers from severe arthritis and Parkinson's disease, making it hard for him to speak and stand. He has dismissed all speculation that he would step down, saying his mind is still strong.
