Egyptian officials have met with Palestinian militant leaders to strengthen a Palestinian ceasefire ahead of next week's Israeli-Palestinian summit.
The officials met Thursday with leaders from Hamas and Islamic Jihad, whose groups agreed two weeks ago to stop attacks on Israeli targets. The militants want Israel to also agree to the ceasefire. Next week, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak hosts Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for talks on the peace process. Tuesday's summit will also include Jordan's King Abdullah.
The White House welcomed news of the Sharm el-Sheikh meeting. It is set for one day after U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is scheduled to meet separately with Mr. Sharon and Mr. Abbas.
