Death Toll from Bangladesh Ferry Sinking Surpasses 80

  • Amir Khasru

At least 81 people are confirmed dead and more than 100 are still missing after a passenger ferry capsized in Bangladesh.

Authorities say the vessel was sailing from the capital, Dhaka, to Chandpur when it was caught in a tropical storm late Saturday. They say divers found 44 bodies inside the sunken ship, while the rest were pulled from the Buringanga River. The operation was suspended for the night, but it will resume early Monday. Bangladeshi Shipping Minister Akbar Hossain visited the scene and pledged a quick investigation. Police say they believe about 200 people were on board when the ferry went down. But the exact number may never be determined as most ferry companies do not keep passenger lists and the ships are often overcrowded
