Indian-controlled Kashmir is trying to dig out from its heaviest snowfall in 15 years.
The severe weather has blocked highways, knocked down power lines, and cut telephone service. At least 3,500 people are believed to be stranded in the cars on the Jammu to Srinagar highway. A non-stop snowfall Saturday made efforts to clear the road hopeless. Nine people, including several highway workers, were swept away by an avalanche in the Ladakh region.
Homes were also buried. The heavy snow in Kashmir is forecast to last until later today (Sunday). Record snowfall is also reported in neighboring Pakistan. Another half meter of snow fell Saturday in Murree, north of Islamabad, bringing the season's total snowfall there to five meters -- a new record.
