The US military says it has foiled a massive escape attempt by detainees at a prison camp in southern Iraq. Military officials said Friday they found two large tunnels under Camp Bucca which houses nearly 6,000 detainees.
Officials say they were tipped off by the discovery of a smaller tunnel earlier this week and complaints from workers who said huge amounts of dirt were clogging machines used to pump out toilets. The officials say the tunnels were almost complete but no prisoners escaped. Meanwhile, two car car bombings south of Baghdad killed at least three people Friday and gunmen killed a senior Iraqi National Guard commander (Colonel Salman Mohammed Hassan) as he left a Baghdad funeral. Also, Iraqi politicians say the national assembly will meet Tuesday and is expected to announce a new government.
