Iraqi lawmakers have elected Industry Minister Hajim al-Hassani, a Sunni Arab, to head parliament after a two month deadlock.
The lawmakers also chose nuclear scientist Hussain al-Shahristani, a Shi'ite Muslim, and Kurdish lawmaker Aref Taifour as deputy speakers. Iraqi authorities say they hope to select a new president, two vice presidents and a prime minister when parliament meets again Wednesday.
Meanwhile, al-Qaida-linked militants claimed responsibility for Saturday's attack on Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison that wounded 44 U.S. soldiers and 12 detainees. The U.S. military says perimeter security was not breached. And a U.S. soldier was killed Sunday in an insurgent attack near Bayji.
