Bush Urges Sharon Not to Expand Jewish Settlements

President Bush has urged Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to honor his commitments to the "roadmap" peace plan and not expand Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

The president spoke on Monday after meeting with the Israeli leader at his Texas ranch.

The Bush administration has objected to an Israeli plan to add more than 3,500 new homes to its largest West Bank settlement because the plan appears to violate provisions in the U.S.-backed "roadmap" plan.

For his part, Mr. Sharon promised to meet all obligations under the roadmap plan, and repeated a vow to remove unauthorized settler outposts in the occupied territories.

Mr. Bush also praised the Israeli leader for what he called his "courageous" plan to withdraw all Israeli settlers from the Gaza Strip. The withdrawal, which faces stiff opposition from settlers and their right-wing supporters, is set to begin in July.
