Moussaoui Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy Charges

The only person charged in the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States has pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges. Zacarias entered the plea Friday at a federal court in (the U.S. state of) Virginia. Moussaoui was accused of working with the al-Qaida terrorist group ahead of the September 11th attacks. He was charged with conspiracy to commit terrorism, destroy aircraft and murder government employees. Moussaoui told the court he was not directly involved in the attacks, but was part of another plot to crash an airliner into the White House. U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Moussaoui lied to authorities after his arrest in August 2001, allowing al-Qaida to carry out the attacks. He said the government will seek the death penalty.
