New Government Approved in Iraq

Iraq has its first elected government since the fall of Saddam Hussein. Parliament approved Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari's list of cabinet members Thursday. Five posts, including the important defense and oil ministries, are being filled by temporary ministers. Negotiators could not agree on permanent candidates. President Bush has congratulated the new Iraqi government. But minority Sunni Muslim leaders complain they are under-represented and have threatened to drop out. Iraqi leaders must now work with parliament to draw up a new constitution before general elections scheduled for later this year. The government also faces the challenge of stopping a violent insurgency. In the latest unrest, two interior ministry officials were killed in Baghdad. In Tikrit, a suicide car bombing killed at least two Iraqi soldiers and wounded about 15 others, including three U.S. soldiers.
