US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs Christina Rocca on Friday said that the given the nature of the complexity it is difficult for Bangladesh to get a duty free access to US market for Bangladeshi garments. She, however, assured that she would inform her administration about requests made by Bangladesh’s businessmen. She also said that Bangladesh should bring diversification in her exportable items. Bangladesh’s apparel manufacturers and exporters at the hour-long breakfast meeting with Ms Rocca pleaded for Bush administration's steps to waive $330 million paid as duty every year for Bangladeshi garments. The business leaders told Rocca Bangladesh is enjoying some sort of trade facilities from most of the developed countries including Canada, Australia and Japan and from the EU, but not from the US in the post-MFA era.
