Indian officials say Muslim rebels have shot and killed the brother of an ex-militant leader in Indian Kashmir. He was one of five people killed in the region since Friday night.
Indian authorities say Abdul Gani Bhat was shot near his home on the outskirts of Srinagar. Mr. Bhat is the brother of Zaffar Abdul Fateh, formerly a top commander of the region's largest rebel group, Hizbul Mujahideen. Mr. Fateh is now part of a moderate separatist movement.
Four other people were killed in other clashes in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Several groups have been fighting for Kashmir's independence or its merger with Pakistan since 1989. The insurgency has claimed tens of thousands of lives.
