A US magazine says it regrets that it "got any part" of its story "wrong" in reporting that interrogators allegedly desecrated the Koran at a US military prison In a statement Sunday, Newsweek extended sympathies to the victims of the violence that broke out in Afghanistan over the story that US interrogators at the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba prison flushed a copy of the Koran down a toilet in a bid to frighten Muslim detainees.
The US military says it has found no credible evidence to support that allegation or any others involving desecration of the Koran. Newsweek says the original source of the report -- a man it identifies as a "knowledgeable US official" -- is no longer sure where he saw the allegation, but that it might have been in "investigative documents or drafts."
