Opposition Strike Shuts Down Bangladesh Capital

Life in Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, was paralyzed on Wednesday by a strike called by the main opposition Awami League to protest the killing of a party member. Schools, shops and private businesses were closed and the city's streets were deserted during the day-long strike.

Opposition politician Khorshed Alam died Tuesday after being shot by unidentified gunmen outside his home in central Dhaka. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Police say they are investigating. So far, no one has been arrested for the murder, which prompted scores of angry opposition activists to smash vehicles in the area to protest the killing. Dozens of people have died in political violence in Bangladesh over the past two years.
