Pakistani Opposition Criticizes Musharraf's Push for Another Term

Pakistani opposition parties have condemned a government statement that President Pervez Musharraf will seek another term as president after this one ends in 2007. Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said Tuesday the country needs General Musharraf as the leader. He said parliament will give him a mandate to remain president after 2007. Pakistani analysts say the announcement makes it clear that the Pakistani leader is going to cling to power as long as he can. General Musharraf seized power in a bloodless coup more than five years ago. A spokesman for former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's party said the general has captured power unconstitutionally and illegally and he should step down. A spokesman for the opposition Pakistan Muslim League-N said this is an indication of his dictatorial designs.
