Six Afghan Aid Workers Killed in Second Attack in as Many Days

Suspected Taleban militants have attacked an aid agency's vehicle in southern Afghanistan, killing all six people inside. Officials say the ambush took place onThursday in Zabul province. According to the Associated Press, the victims were transporting the body of one of five Afghans killed by gunmen a day earlier in Helmand province when militants attacked them.

All 11 victims of the two fatal attacks are believed to be involved in a U.S.-funded project to provide alternative livelihoods for farmers growing opium. Also Thursday, in the southern Kandahar province, two U.S. soldiers were slightly wounded when a bomb exploded near their vehicle. Meanwhile, police in Kabul continue to search for an Italian aid worker kidnapped by gunmen on Monday. Earlier, one of the kidnappers had threatened to kill Clementina Cantoni if their demands were not met.
