The State Department is warning US citizens in Uzbekistan of the possibility of terrorism. A State Department announcement Friday says the U.S. government has information that a terrorist group may be planning to attack US interests in Uzbekistan in the near future.
The announcement also recommends Americans avoid unnecessary travel to Andijon, where Uzbek forces fired on anti-government protesters two weeks ago. Witnesses say hundreds were killed. The State Department this week placed the Islamic Jihad Group of Central Asia on its list of international terrorist organizations. The group has carried out bombings in Uzbekistan, including attacks on the US and Israeli embassies.
