Pakistan Bars Rape Victim from Leaving the Country

Pakistani authorities have forbidden a high-profile rape victim from leaving the country. Officials said Saturday that Mukhtaran Mai has been put on a government travel restriction list for her own protection. But Ms. Mai told reporters by telephone that she feels like a prisoner and is demanding that she be allowed to see her lawyer. She said police are surrounding her house in a village in Punjab province. A village council ordered men to gang rape Ms. Mai in 2002 because of her brother's alleged affair with a woman from a powerful tribe. A Punjab court Friday ordered 12 suspects in the rape to be freed from jail. Five of the men previously had their death sentences overturned. One suspect is serving life in prison.
