Indonesia Reports First Human Case Of Bird Flu

Indonesian health officials say a poultry farmer on the island of Sulawesi has become the country's first confirmed human case of the potential deadly bird flu virus.

Authorities said blood tests of the farmer indicate the man was carrying antibodies for the H5N1 strain - but doctors say he is healthy and has shown no symptoms of the illness.

The discovery makes Indonesia the fourth country in which the virus has crossed from animals to humans since the latest outbreak in 2003, which killed more than 50 people in Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia.

Bird flu has swept through poultry populations in large parts of East and Southeast Asia, where tens of millions of birds have either died or been slaughtered.
