India, Bangladesh Hold Talks on Boosting Trade, Security

Officials from India and Bangladesh have begun two days of talks in New Delhi on a wide range of issues, including economic and trade cooperation, sharing water resources and border management.

Indian officials say discussions between Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran and his Bangladeshi counterpart, Mohammed Hemayatuddin, will focus on ways to increase bilateral trade and cross-border security.

Relations between the two neighbors have been tense in recent years amid mutual accusations that the other side is harboring rebels and criminals.

Tensions reached a record high after India began to build a barbed wire fence along their 4,000-kilometer porous border to prevent rebels, smugglers and illegal migrants from crossing it.
