Rain, Floods Kill More Than 100 in India

Indian officials say more than 100 people have died and some 200,000 have become homeless due to monsoon rains and severe flooding in the western state of Gujarat.

Reports from the region say storms and floods have overwhelmed villages and towns, and have forced thousands of people in low-lying areas to abandon their homes and head to higher ground.

The army has been called in for assistance in three districts. Officials say all schools in Gujarat have been closed until Monday.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke with Gujarat's chief minister Narendra Modi on Friday and assured him of help for the state.

Monsoon rains have also affected the eastern state of Orissa.
