Pakistani, Bahraini Diplomats Attacked in Baghdad

  • VOA News

The top envoys to Iraq from Pakistan and Bahrain have escaped targeted attacks in Baghdad, just days after kidnappers snatched Egypt's top diplomat to Iraq.

Pakistan's ambassador Mohammed Younis Khan was unharmed Tuesday after his security team fired on attackers shooting at his convoy. Pakistan says the ambassador will be temporarily moved to Amman, Jordan.

Earlier in the day, Bahrain's top diplomat in Baghdad Hassan Malallah Al Anasari was wounded when gunmen shot at him on his way to work.

The attacks follow Saturday's kidnapping of Egypt's top envoy in Baghdad, Ihab al-Sharif. Officials say there has been no word from his abductors.

Elsewhere in Baghdad, insurgents killed four female airport workers in an ambush on their minibus.

Meanwhile an influential Sunni clerical group said Monday it will call on Iraqi Sunnis to vote in upcoming elections. The group that oversees Iraq's Sunni mosques said it will ask clerics to issues fatwas ordering Sunnis to vote in elections that they have largely boycotted in the past.
