Eminent Islamic scholar and writer Dr Rafiq Zakaria died at his residence in Mumbai late last night.
A scholar on Indian politics and religion, Dr Zakaria was a prolific writer on India, Islam and British imperialism.
He was also associated with India's ruling Congress party. He had started educational institutions in his hometown Aurangabad and Mumbai where he had settled.
Zakaria was India's UN representative in 1965, 1990 and 1995. He is survived by his wife Fatima and two sons. Paramasish Ghosh Roy has more details.
