Pakistan Pledges Help on Afghan Election Security

Pakistan's prime minister says his country will do everything it can to prevent cross-border militant attacks ahead of Afghanistan's parliamentary elections in September.

Shaukat Aziz made the pledge to Afghan President Hamid Karzai Sunday in Kabul during talks on fighting terrorism and extremism. Mr. Aziz also unveiled a 100-million dollar aid package for development projects in Afghanistan.

On the border Sunday, a man died in a bomb blast at the Chaman border post. Pakistani officials believe the bomb went off prematurely and killed the man who was carrying it.
Meanwhile, the U.S. military in Afghanistan says suspected Taleban militants killed an American soldier in Helmand province.

It says U.S. forces were on a patrol Sunday when they came under fire today from up to 20 insurgents. One attacker was killed and U.S. forces are pursuing the attackers.
