Thousands of people in Indian Kashmir took to the streets on Sunday to protest the killing of three youths who troops mistook for Islamic militants.
The youths were shot and killed late Saturday in the northern Kupwara district which borders the Line of Control dividing Kashmir between India and Pakistan.
Military officials say an army patrol approached the teenagers and asked them to stop. The officials say the youths started to run away, prompting the soldiers to open fire.
A fourth teenager was seriously wounded. Army spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Vijay Batra, expressed deep regret over the shootings.
