India's 'The Statesman' Editor-in-Chief Dies

The editor-in-chief of India's "The Statesman" newspaper, C.R. Irani, has died at the age of 75. Doctors say Mr. Irani had been suffering a kidney ailment and died Saturday from massive organ failure while hospitalized in Calcutta. Mr. Irani was known as a fierce defender of press freedoms for criticizing government censorship rules in the 1970's. He published blank spaces in The Statesman where reports or photos had been barred. Mr. Irani had served as the chairman of the Press Trust of India, and was the first Indian named chairman of the International Press Institute. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.
