513 People Killed in Floods, Mudslides in India

Indian officials say at least 513 people have been killed in floods, landslides and building collapses triggered by torrential rains in western Maharashtra state.

Officials say rescue teams are searching for survivors buried under debris in several towns and low lying villages across the state. They say the death toll could still rise.

More than than half of the deaths occurred in the state capital Bombay, also known as Mumbai, which has been paralyzed since Tuesday. Aerial pictures showed parts of the city under waist-deep water.

The torrential rains eased Thursday and rescue teams rushed emergency supplies to thousands of marooned villagers.

Pope Benedict has sent a telegram of condolences, saying he is praying for the hundreds of victims as well as those involved in the massive relief and rebuilding effort.
