Major Fire on Indian Offshore Oil Platform

India's oil minister says a major fire has broken out at an offshore oil platform in the Arabian Sea, completely destroying it.

Shankar Aiyar told reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday that up to 300 people could be trapped on the platform and that there is bound to be some loss of life and injuries. He said helicopters were sent to evacuate people, and that the navy and coast guard have been asked to help in the rescue operation.

The platform is located 160 kilometers west of Bombay, India's financial capital.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
