The British Foreign Ministry says authorities are trying to gain access to a British citizen reported to be under arrest in Zambia for alleged involvement in the July seventh London subway blasts.
A ministry official Thursday refused to confirm U.S. media reports identifying the suspect as Haroon Rashid Aswat, a British citizen of South Asian descent in his early 30s.
CNN television and the Los Angeles Times newspaper say Mr. Aswat is the alleged mastermind of the bombings that killed 52 people and four suicide bombers in London. They say he became a suspect when investigators discovered he had been in telephone contact with the four bombers.
Mr. Aswat is wanted in the United States for allegedly trying to set up a terrorist training camp in the western state of Oregon in 1999.
