Lawyers in Bangladesh Demand  A Judiciary Free from the Government’s Interference

Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad at a grand rally of lawyers on Friday made an 18-point demand formulated on the basis of suggestions placed by lawyers to make the judiciary free from "politicisation and corruption". The Parishad informed that nearly three thousand lawyers from all over the country participated in this grand rally. The speakers in the rally said that people are deprived of the rule of law and, therefore, the country is facing problems. They said all professional groups including the lawyers should begin a united movement to ensure the independence of judiciary. Dr Kamal Hossain an eminent jurist said that their movement is not to aimed at putting any particularly party into power. They want people’s power. Addressing the rally as the chief guest, eminent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain said the government is violating the constitution in running the state affairs. "The Jatiya Sangsad has become ineffective as the constitution is not being followed there," Dr Kamal told the rally organised by the Ainjibi Samannay Parishad on the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) premises. Dr Kamal, also Gono Forum president, said people are passing their days in a sense of insecurity as the rule of law is yet to be established. "The way the country is being ruled has made violation of the constitution a common phenomenon," said Dr Kamal.
