Sri Lankan President Seeks Court Decision on Presidential Poll Date

  • VOA News

Sri Lanka's President Chandrika Kumaratunga has asked the Supreme Court to determine when the next presidential election should be held.

A statement issued by her office says that, in accordance with the country's constitution, Mrs. Kumaratunga has sought the court's ruling on the issue.

Sri Lanka's opposition says Mrs. Kumaratunga's second and final six-year term ends in December. But the ruling Freedom Party insists she is entitled to be in office until the end of next year, because she ended her first term one year ahead of schedule by calling snap polls.

The Supreme Court's ruling will be final and cannot be challenged.
