Israeli Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has resigned to protest Israel's upcoming withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. He stepped down Sunday before the Israeli cabinet voted 17-5 to start the first stage of the pullout on August 15th by dismantling three isolated Gaza settlements. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon says the evacuation will begin on schedule, despite the resignation. Mr. Sharon appointed Deputy Prime Minister Ehud Olmert as acting finance minister. Meanwhile, Israeli authorities placed three Jewish extremists in administrative detention Sunday. Israel approved the controversial move of detaining people without trials following last week's killing of four Israeli Arabs by a Jewish extremist opposed to the Gaza withdrawal.
