Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas was in Egypt on Wednesday to discuss Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and four West Bank settlements with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
Israel says it has reached a deal with Egypt to deploy 750 Egyptian soldiers on the Gaza side of the border to replace departing Israeli troops. But both Egypt and the Palestinian Authority say there are still several issues to be resolved before the deployment can take place.
This week, Israel finished evacuating about 85-hundred Jewish settlers from 25 Gaza and West Bank settlements. The government is paying to temporarily house them in hotels in Israel, and will later move them to permanent homes. Each relocated family is to receive between 200 and 300-thousand dollars in compensation.
In a separate development, police say one of two Jews reportedly stabbed by a Palestinian in Jerusalem on Wednesday has died.
