Suicide Bomber Hits Israeli Bus Station

A Palestinian bomber has blown himself up in the Israeli city of Beersheba in the first suicide attack since Israel withdrew Jewish settlers from the Gaza Strip this month. Israeli police say the bomber critically wounded two Israeli security guards.

Two Palestinian militant groups -- Islamic Jihad and al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades -- claimed responsibility. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has condemned the bombing.

Meanwhile, the Israeli cabinet has approved the deployment of 750 Egyptian police along Egypt's border with Gaza. Israel says its troops in Gaza will leave the border area by the end of September. In other developments, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's eldest son has been indicted in connection with a corruption investigation involving his father's 1999 political campaign. Officials say the son faces charges of violating campaign finance laws, forgery and perjury.
