Sunni Arabs Protest Iraqi Draft Constitution, Seek Amendments

  • VOA News

Hundreds of Sunni Arabs opposed to Iraq's new draft constitution have rallied in Tikrit to protest the charter, while a leading Sunni political grouping said it will continue trying to amend the draft. Most Sunni Arab leaders are urging their followers to defeat the charter in a national referendum due by October 15th. One large grouping, the Iraqi Islamic Party, says it will seek changes before the vote. Iraq's interim President Jalal Talabani has urged Iraqis to support the draft constitution, despite some disagreements. Meanwhile, Reuters news agency is demanding the immediate release from U.S custody of an Iraqi cameraman who was wounded by U.S. forces while traveling in a car in Baghdad Sunday. A second member of the news crew was killed in the incident, which occurred while an Iraqi police patrol was under attack. The agency quotes the U.S. military as saying investigators are still questioning the wounded man.
