Bangladesh has adopted a five-day working week for government employees in an effort to save fuel and control soaring energy costs.
The government issued a statement saying all government, semi-government and autonomous organizations will get Saturday off in addition to the traditional Friday weekly holiday.
On Sunday, the government raised domestic fuel prices in response to soaring global oil prices and to help minimize the losses at the state-run Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation.
In neighboring India, the New Delhi government also raised gasoline and diesel prices by about seven percent today, but decided not to raise prices of cooking gas and kerosene to protect the poor.
Amir Khasru reports on the reaction of the government employees, business owners and others.
