A coalition of major American Islamic groups formed a Muslim Hurricane Relief Task Force (MHRTF) to coordinate aid efforts and pledged to raise $10 million in humanitarian relief for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Spokesman for Council on American –Islamic Relations (CAIR), Ibrahim Hooper in an interview spoke about the goals, current plans and guidelines of the taskforce.
Mr. Hooper said the taskforce will first make an assessment of the needs of the people who are suffering in the Gulf area and see what the American Muslim communities can do for the relief efforts. He also said that the volunteers are already there helping those in need. The spokesman also said that the Muslim Hurricane Relief Task Force has set guidelines to ensure financial accountability and transparency so that people are assured that the money is reaching where it is needed.
