Indonesia Steps Up Hunt For Bali Blast Masterminds

  • VOA News

Investigators in Indonesia are hunting for the masterminds of suicide bombings on the resort island of Bali that left some 22 people dead. Police are using videotapes by tourists and the suspected bombers severed heads in an effort to identify identify the men and find clues about those who planned the attacks. Indonesian officials say they suspect the militant Islamist group Jemaah Islamiyah carried out the bombings. Police said they found only the suspects' heads and legs at the blast sites, indicating that explosives were strapped to their bodies. One amateur video that police released appears to show one of the attackers wearing a backpack just seconds before an explosion. Three explosions went off Saturday at restaurants in two of Bali's popular tourist areas (Jimbaran Beach and Kuta). The attacks wounded at least 100 Indonesians and foreigners.
