South Asian Ministers Discuss Increased Cooperation in Energy Sector

Seven South Asian and Southeast Asian nations have decided to explore the idea of creating an interconnected electric grid for the region.

In a statement on Tuesday, India's External Affairs Ministry announced energy ministers' interest in developing country-to-country grid interconnections, so electricity could flow across southern Asia.

The possibility was discussed on Tuesday at an energy ministers' conference known as BIMSTEC, the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation in New Delhi, India.

Officials from India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Burma and Thailand participated in the meetings.

The ministers also discussed plans to enhance energy efficiency and security in the region, by cooperating further in the areas of natural gas and hydropower.
