U.S. Congressman Joseph Crowley says although the United States and Bangladesh have different kinds of democracies, they share the same democratic values.
Mr. Crowley, a Democrat from New York told VOA a democratic Bangladesh is crucial for the South Asia region, especially because it is a Muslim country. He said he hopes democracy will further flourish in Bangladesh. He condemned the recent bombings across Bangladesh and said the arrest of Muslim cleric Mufti Abdul Hannan in that case is a positive development, and hoped that other suspects will also be arrested.
The congressman says he hopes the November summit in Dhaka of the seven-nation South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation will boost trade relations among countries of that region.
Congressman Crowley also said relations between Dhaka and Washington are very strong.
