Government Condems Killing of Saddam Trial Defense Lawyer

Defense lawyers in the trial of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and his seven co-defendants have demanded better protection, after the assassination of another defense attorney in the case. The demand came Friday, as the Iraqi government condemned the killing of Saadoun al-Janabi, the attorney for one of Saddam's co-defendants. Mr. al-Janabi was found dead of gunshot wounds on Friday in Baghdad, one day after gunmen seized him from his office. Meanwhile, Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa met Friday with Sunni Arab religious leaders in Baghdad. Some Sunni leaders say any talks on national reconciliation, promoted by Mr. Moussa, depend on a timetable for the withdrawal of coalition troops. Also, election officials say they expect to announce the results of last Saturday's constitutional referendum within one to two days. Preliminary turnout figures released Friday show that between 63 and 64 percent of Iraqis voted on the proposed constitution
