UN Security Council Condemns Iranian Remarks about Israel

  • VOA News

The United Nations Security Council has condemned Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's call for Israel to "be wiped off the map." In a statement released Friday, the council said it supports U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's earlier statement denouncing the comments. Mr. Annan said Thursday that under the U.N. charter all members are obliged to refrain from the threat or use of force against other nations. Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said Palestinians have recognized Israel's right to exist. He said what the international community should be discussing is adding a Palestinian state to the map, not wiping Israel from it. In Tehran, Mr. Ahmadinejad stood by his earlier comments. He told a huge crowd marching in the Iranian capital Friday that international condemnation is irrelevant
