Violence Reported in Northern Ethiopia on Fifth Day of Protests

Violence has erupted in northern Ethiopia on the fifth day of anti-government unrest that has left at least 46 people dead and more than 150 wounded.

Witnesses say police and opposition supporters clashed on Saturday in the northern town of Debre Birhan. There were no official reports of casualties.

The capital, Addis Ababa, has been quiet but tense on Saturday.

Witnesses say government security forces are patrolling the streets of the city, where at least 42 people have been killed since Tuesday. Some residents have been seen venturing out of their homes, but many have expressed concern the violence could flare up again.

Opposition supporters are protesting last May's elections, alleging massive fraud.

Ethiopia's information minister, Berhan Hailu told VOA the protests are illegal and blamed the violence on what he called politically motivated people.
