The Indian army says its security forces have killed two senior rebel commanders in Indian Kashmir.
A Defense Ministry spokesman says the two -- an Afghan war veteran active in the Kashmir valley for the past 12 years and his close aide -- were gunned down late Tuesday in the southern Pulwama district. The spokesman said troops were conducting searches in the area when the militants attacked them.
The soldiers recovered two rifles and ammunition from the assailants. Kashmiri militants have been fighting since 1989 for Kashmir's independence or its merger with Pakistan. The insurgency has claimed tens of thousand of lives.
