Pakistan's military says an army soldier and a suspected militant have been killed in a clash in a tribal region bordering Afghanistan. Another suspected militant was captured.
The military says the incident occurred Sunday in South Waziristan. It says militants opened fire at the troops after a land mine explosion killed one soldier. The troops retaliated, killing one attacker and capturing another. Last year, several hundred militants and troops were killed when Pakistani forces fought pitched battles against militants in the same area. Many al-Qaida militants and their Taleban allies are believed to be hiding somewhere along the mountainous border, after being driven out from Afghanistan by U.S.-led forces four years ago.
