Delegates from Muslim Nations Prepare for Summit

Delegates from 57 Muslim countries will discuss the challenges and dangers of Islamic extremism when they meet Wednesday at the Organization of Islamic Conference summit in Saudi Arabia.

Representatives began discussing the agenda on Tuesday in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, with plans to combat terrorism high on the list.

OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, who is from Turkey, proposed a plan to restructure the 36- year-old organization over the next ten years. The so-called "10 Year Program of Action" calls for decisive cooperation to deal with political, socio-economic, cultural and scientific challenges that weaken Islamic nations.

The summit begins Wednesday in the Muslim holy city of Mecca.
