Officials in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu say at least 43 people were trampled to death and nearly 50 others injured in a stampede at a flood relief camp.
Sunday's incident at a government school in the state's capital, Chennai (also known as Madras), occurred as thousands of people who lined up to collect food coupons started a wild scramble to get inside during a sudden downpour.
Police say most of the victims were women, and the death toll is expected to rise.
Last month, six people were crushed to death and 20 injured in a similar stampede to collect cash, food and clothing from a relief center in the city.
Thousands of people have been left homeless by heavy rains that have lashed the state since late October.
